AIR: Binaca Geetmala Legend Radio Jockey Ameen Sayani's story


Binaca Geetmala has been a super hit musical program on Radio in the golden era. The memories of the creator, presenter and the Radio Jockey Ameen Sayani's mesmerizing voice the immortal songs that he played as Sartaj songs in his famous musical show Binaca Geetmala. There was a time when All India Radio was more effective than a watch. people set their routine as per the programmes played. Radio club of Bombay began broadcasting programmes in June 1923. Stations based in Kolkata, Madras, Mysore and Delhi were set up. The Indian State Broadcasting Service was named All India Radio on June 8, 1936 which was renamed Akashvaani in 1956. Binaca Geetmala, one of the most popular programmes of AIR, began in 1952. It was the first version of what later evolved as the countdown for songs based on their popularity. The countdown began in 1952 and was broad cast on Radio Ceylon till 1988. Later, it was shifted to Vividh Bharti channel of the AIR. Legend. Kulsum Sayani mother of the well known radio personality Ameen Sayani, Kulsum was born in 1900. her inspiration was none other than Mahatma Gandhi. Her father, Dr Rajabally Patel, was the personal Physician to Gandhiji and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Ameen Sayani voice brought life to every household. ''Ji haan bhaiyon aur beheno. Main aapka dost Ameen Sayani bol raha hoon aur aap sun rahe hai Binaca Geetmala.''
